First impressions count! What to wear to your interview

A successful interview is the result of many key ingredients, one being your outfit. What you wear is an important representation of who you are and the message you’d like to portray to the interviewer. Follow these tips to increase your chances of getting hired.

Women:
Solid colours, and conservative suits are the easiest way to go. Limited jewelry (less distracting to the interviewer)  and a neat, professional hairstyle will ensure the focus is on your skills and not your creative flair with a hairdryer. Manicured nails and simple make-up with just a hint of perfume will polish your look.

Men:
As with the ladies, a solid colour conservative suit is the best bet. Limit your jewelry and keep your tie simple. This isn't the time to show off your imaginative tie collection. Closed, professional shoes are a must, socks must be dark. Make sure your nails are trimmed and go easy on the aftershave.

Construction and Engineering

At an interview for a job in this sector, then you'll need to be practical. Be conservative with jewelry, wear sensible shoes and ensure your hairstyle can stand up a hard hat.

Tech

If you’re applying for a job in the tech industry position, you might not need a suit. Research the company, and the position, you might find that a collared shirt and pressed trousers will suffice. However, leave the witty slogans at home, and upgrade your look to business formal if you’re interviewing for a high-level position.

Finance

Full business formal attire will be expected if you're interviewing for a professional finance position. Money is serious business and you should look the part.

Marketing

Typically, a suit is the uniform for a marketing role, but you might be able to go with a bold design or brighter colours. The company or product you’ll be representing will determine how far you can go. Rather err on the side of caution for the first interview.

Office

When interviewing for an office position, such as HR or reception, where you'll be face to face with people all day, wear something comfortable but classic. Clean lines, flat shoes and reasonable colours and jewelry will suffice for the first interview.

Top tip! Even if you know the company is not very corporate, it’s important to dress to a high standard, at least in the interview stages.

You’re going for a business meeting, not on a date, so remember to look your professional best. Not only is it a compliment to your interviewer, but you’ll automatically feel more confident and ready to tackle your interview.

Good luck!
